Nintendo Revolution Could Debut in May

Posted by microdude on 26th March 2006

Although Nintendo hasn’t announced a release date or price for its next-generation console video game, a company executive said Thursday that the “coming-out party” would be at an industry trade show in May.Some investors were hoping that details for the console, code-named Revolution, would emerge in a morning keynote address from company President Satoru Iwata at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Jose, California.

Iwata’s speech, delivered to an audience of game creators, stressed the importance of maintaining innovation in an era of skyrocketing video game budgets.

“Nintendo reiterated their strategy to emphasize game innovation and what is innovative,” said Schelley Olhava, analyst with market research firm IDC, who was attending in anticipation of higher profile news. Last year, Nintendo announced the Revolution at GDC.

Nintendo did announce a new “Zelda” game for its DS handheld, among other games, and an expansion of its online library for downloadable games for the Revolution.

“Nintendo’s been relatively tight-lipped about their next-generation console plans, investors were hoping for incremental details today,” said Evan Wilson, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities, who also attended.

Following the morning keynote, Reggie Fils-Aime, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America, hinted E3 was the likely place where video-game industry watchers would learn more about the console.

“That’s where consumers and analysts will get to see, touch, feel the Revolution content, not only by Nintendo, but also all the third party developers,” said Fils-Aime. At last year’s E3 event, the company said that the console would be available sometime in 2006.

The Xbox 360 from Microsoft has been on shelves since November, while Sony, which controls about 70 percent of the global market, said last week that its PlayStation 3 hardware will become available globally in early November.

Nintendo’s current-generation platform, Gamecube, has sold 20.6 million units worldwide since its launch, slightly behind Microsoft’s Xbox efforts. Sony has sold more than 100 million PlayStation 2 units globally.

“While Nintendo has experienced market share declines in the console and handheld industries, their moves are very important for third party publishers,” said Wilson. The analyst notes that THQ Inc has traditionally generated 30 percent of its sales on Nintendo platforms.

“Today’s message was directed to a development community to identify new ideas and how to bring them to market in a profitable way,” said Fils-Aime.
